College students and their families in Oklahoma are struggling with high tuitions and fees. Over the last 18 years, annual revenue from tuition and fees has increased by $940 million, or 339%.
Higher education officials often point to a recent decrease in state funding as the need to increase tuition at such levels. But, during the last 18 years, higher education has seen a slight increase of $72.6 million in state funding and only a 9% increase in student enrollment.
Tuition and fees were increased well past what is necessary to replace declining appropriations.
The bottom line is Oklahoma’s higher education has developed a serious spending problem and is passing the cost directly onto Oklahoma students and families.
