Spotlight on taxes: sales tax
April 4, 2023

As I pointed out in my previous post, according to the latest data from the Oklahoma Tax Commission (here and here), total state and local tax collections in 2022 were $21.1 billion. This resulted in a per capita tax burden of $5,253. The burden for a typical family of four would be just over $21,000.
As I mentioned in the previous post, Oklahomans pay many different taxes—income tax, sales tax, gasoline tax, insurance premium tax, excise tax, property tax, and many more. Today let’s consider the sales tax. In 2022 the state sales tax brought in $3.55 billion. Local sales taxes amounted to $3.05 billion. This is a combined $6.6 billion. With 4.02 million people in the state, there is a per capita tax burden of $1,642 for combined sales taxes. A family of four would pay $6,568 in local and state sales taxes on average.
