Take Action: Urge your state legislators to prioritize reading reforms
Tragic, but 100% true. The reading crisis among Oklahoma students is real. It's time to address the problem, and your action is needed!
Many Oklahomans are shocked to learn that 77% of 4th graders, and 80% of 8th graders, in Oklahoma public schools are not reading at grade level.
Last year, Oklahoma lawmakers mandated that public schools use phonics for reading instruction. But lawmakers still must reinstate the ban on social promotion—requiring schools to ensure a 3rd grade student is reading at grade level before advancing to 4th grade.
Mississippi has paired these reforms with aggressive reading intervention efforts leading up to 4th grade. Their reading scores have leapfrogged 40 other states and put Mississippi among the national leaders in reading proficiency.
Thankfully, Oklahoma lawmakers are expressing a strong interest in locking in the “Mississippi Miracle” reforms for Oklahoma schools. You can bet that status quo forces will work to dissuade them.
We need YOU to use the link below to quickly and easily send a message directly to both of your state legislators, urging them to address the reading crisis so current and future generations of Oklahoma students have this early advantage.
