Stay-at-home moms worthless: New York Times
According to Irwin and the Times, parents who work and get a paycheck are good and parents who work and do not collect a paycheck are worth, well, nothing. Actually, given that the Times would have government pay these parents not to stay at home, perhaps the real thesis is that they are worth less than nothing, causing some sort of undefined social harm.Trent England | December 24, 2014

Free Market Friday: Ending the cycle
Economists have long understood the tragedy of the commons. It happens when nobody takes responsibility for something, often because everyone is supposedly responsible for it together.Michael Carnuccio | October 31, 2014

Free Market Friday: Fostering stability
Right now, some 400,000 American children are in foster care, as well as uncounted thousands more in other nations who are eligible for adoption. Americans have always been among the most generous on earth in opening their homes to adoptees, and the benefits of adoption are obvious.Michael Carnuccio | August 22, 2014

Families, Not Government, Can Reduce Generational Poverty
I have previously written in these pages (“Black Leaders Say Personal Responsibility Key to Economic Opportunity,” July 2013) about the mayor of a great city, a prize-winning economist, and an award-winning actor who all speak about the need for stable families.Wendy Warcholik, Ph.D. | May 7, 2014

Family Intactness, Parental Participation, and Student Performance

GDP Undervalues the Impact of the Family
Clearly, maximizing GDP isn’t the same as maximizing economic well-being. The family plays a crucial role in a country’s determinant of economic well-being, and the family is grossly misrepresented in official U.S. economic statistics.Wendy Warcholik, Ph.D. | January 13, 2014

Associated Press Now Outsourcing to Leftist Nonprofits
Never accuse the Associated Press of being hide bound by journalistic tradition. In a sharp break with past practice, the once-venerable news service is providing its 1,500 member papers with ready-to-run stories produced by "independent" reporters and editors.Ken McIntyre | November 1, 2009

Labor's Day Is Over
In a new paper published by the Cato Institute, we show how the unionization of government employees creates a powerful, permanent constituency for bigger government-one that is motivated, well funded, and organized. We also make some recommendations as to how to check this constituency's growing power-an effort that promises to be an uphill struggle.Don Bellante, David Denholm & Ivan Osorio | October 5, 2009
